PROJECT MANAGERS

WSP have been appointed as project managers for the Rotorua Museum project.

With a 70-year presence in Rotorua, and almost 150 years working on major projects around New Zealand, WSP Opus has unrivalled local knowledge. Their experience working on Rotorua professional services contracts and other local projects means they bring first-hand knowledge and experience of Rotorua’s infrastructure and unique landscape.

Two senior managers have been assigned by WSP Opus to this project. One has extensive design project management experience spanning a career of over 30 years including several restoration and strengthening projects. The second is an accredited Tier 3 project manager with over 18 years project management experience backed up by 10 years construction management experience, including several multi-million dollar projects from cultural buildings to hospitals, shopping complexes and education buildings.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

DPA Architects has been appointed to carry out the design work for the restoration of the heritage Bath House building, with help from local Rotorua firm, Carling Architects.

DPA has a track record of working on heritage buildings around the country. They are also familiar with the specific challenges of the Bath House from their time doing the heritage renovations in 1997 when they worked on the foyer, reception and some of the original baths.

Rotorua-based Carling Architects have a vital ‘on the ground’ presence for the project, and are also providing additional architectural support.

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is a Crown Entity and is the leading national historic heritage agency. They operate in an environment marked by a growing interest in heritage, recognition of its social, cultural, environmental and economic benefits to Aotearoa New Zealand, and awareness of its importance to national identity.

 

 

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS

FIRE ENGINEERS

Fireconnect offers a complete range of fire engineering services. With over 50 years combined experience, their engineers lead the way in the latest design modelling technologies providing practical, economical, and innovative out of the box solutions.

MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL & HYDRAULIC

Based in Cambridge, NZ, Innerscape Ltd are an award-winning engineering and sustainable design company. They have been appointed to plan, design and document the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic service revisions associated with the seismic and architectural works for the Museum project. They will also deliver appropriate upgrades to these services, as they are identified through the building assessment and review process.

 

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION 

Following a comprehensive ‘Expression of Interest’ stage, five companies were invited to tender for the construction contract, in a two-phase tender process.

Hawkins Construction were appointed for the P&G and margins phase. Tenders are currently being evaluated for the second phase.

Hawkins is one of New Zealand’s leading construction businesses and is owned by Downer. The combined technical and construction management expertise that Hawkins and Downer bring to the table provides proven solutions using innovative technology to sustainably deliver outcomes.

Local building and construction company Burton’s have been involved with Rotorua Museum for many years. When the Museum closed, they were a key partner, assisting with the removal of taonga, building bespoke crates to keep the objects safe. They are also assisting with enabling works in preparation for the main construction phase.

FIRE PROTECTION & VERTICAL TRANSPORTATION

Norman Disney & Young (NDY) is a successful international firm of consulting engineers with over 700 staff in offices throughout New Zealand, Australia, UK, Canada, and Asia. Their team of engineers will be responsible for:

  • The sprinkler protection system and associated fire alarm system
  • Upgrade of lifts within the building

RLC TEAM

Stewart Brown, Manager of the Arts & Culture Group of Rotorua Lakes Council, is the project sponsor for the seismic strengthening and upgrade of Rotorua Museum. Stewart has managed other large scale projects, including the $10million install of the ‘Big Splash’ ride at Rainbow Springs. Stewart is also the project sponsor for the strengthening and upgrade of the Sir Howard Morrison Centre, also a Category 1 heritage building, which is due to reopen at the end of 2022.

Stewart is supported by RLC team members in project management, procurement, property, finance, and communications.
