Point Cloud Technology

Work on the Rotorua Bath House has been guided by the digital scanning, documenting, and modelling of the building in virtual space. Using laser scanning technology, the Rotorua Bath House was scanned in its entirety to create a digital model of the building which aligned with its current condition.

A Point Cloud 3D model of the building was then created. A point cloud is a set of data points in virtual space which are produced by 3D scanners. It measures a large number of points on the external surfaces of objects around them. Scanning technology guarantees a high level of accuracy which is often absent in 2D drawings, due to the site-specific nature of the documentation.

This Point Cloud was subsequently developed into a Revit model, which was used as the blueprint for the proposed work to the building. All project partners and consultants have access to the model as a collaborative tool. This tool has enabled design work to continue on the building right throughout the Covid lockdown periods.
